Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Arts and Crafts Village, Kovalam celebrates World Environment Day with a Rainbow Forest of medicinal plants and a children's fashion show in support of the environment and handloom. NORKA Vice-chairman P. Sreeramakrishnan inaugurated the afforestation at 9 AM and the state award winning child actor Sneha Anu inaugurated Envashion fashion show at 5 in the evening. The name of the show, Envashion, is a juxtaposition of the words environment and fashion.
Fifty children between the ages of 6 and 13 participated in the show wearing handloom clothes designed by themselves. Experts from fashion and handloom sectors were the judges. The winners will be announced through the social media pages of the Crafts Village. The prizes will be distributed on July 1. The evening also featured an elocution competition on the topic 'Saving the Environment, My Way' and a treasure hunt.
Rainbow Afforestation is a project of Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) to carry out seven varities of afforestation in seven centres across the state. Of this, the medical plants forest is being implemented in the Crafts Village, which is run by the ULCCS. The forest which was inaugurated today in the premises of the proposed Kalari Academy inside the Village feature medicinal plants used in Kalari treatment.
Sargalaya Arts and Crafts Village in Iringal, UL Cyber Park and UL Care Nayanar Sadanam at Kozhikode, Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction at Chavara, Kollam, the project site of the Thalappadi-Chengala National Highway six-laning and the Thycaud Office of ULCCS were the other centres of afforestation.
